That’s how high the penalties are – weapons are banned on Reumannplatz from Saturday!

After the recent brutal attacks at Reumannplatz in Vienna’s Favoriten district, the announced weapons ban zone will come into force next Saturday at 8 a.m. From then on, not only weapons but also dangerous objects are prohibited there. Anyone who defies the regulation must expect a fine of 1,000 euros.

The zone covers the area between Platz der Kulturen and Reumannplatz. According to the regulation, dangerous objects are those that are suitable and used to exert violence against people or property. “This wording does not mean an absolute ban on entering a weapons ban zone with dangerous objects – but the person carrying such an object must be able to provide a comprehensible and legally compliant reason for carrying them (e.g. direct professional activity),” says the police. The prescribed weapons ban zone applies until June 30, 11:59 p.m. Until this point, it applies from Monday to Sunday from midnight to midnight. Clothes and bags will be searched. From Saturday, the police will be allowed to search clothes and bags of passers-by – provided there is concrete suspicion. Searching vehicles is also permitted. A fine of up to 4,600 euros in the event of a repeat offense. Anyone who ignores the existing weapons ban is committing an administrative offense and must expect a fine of up to 1,000 euros. In the event of a repeat offense, the fine increases to up to 4,600 euros or, alternatively, to a prison sentence of up to four weeks. In response to the increased violence on Vienna’s streets, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) is now relying on an increased police presence in addition to the weapons ban on Reumannplatz on site. In addition, a new task force was founded to combat juvenile crime.
