The 5 departments where you risk having a car accident with an uninsured driver

There are more and more uninsured motorists involved in road accidents. Here are the 5 riskiest departments.

Non-insurance is a scourge… Here is a summary of the latest findings drawn up in June by the Compulsory Damage Insurance Guarantee Fund (FGAO).

If car insurance is a legal obligation for motorists with the subscription, at least, of a third-party contract which only covers compensation for damage caused to others, many drivers drive without insurance.

Over the last five years, the FGAO has noted a 44% increase in the proportion of uninsured drivers involved in injury accidents.

As a result, in 2022, the FGAO compensated 8,443 injured victims and the relatives of 157 deceased people, for payments which reached 107 million euros, an increase of 2.1% compared to 2019.

The FGAO then turns against the uninsured driver to obtain reimbursement of the sums paid. Depending on the severity of the accident, these amounts can reach hundreds of thousands or even millions of euros.

Non-insurance is a scourge for the community which bears most of the cost via the contribution levied on all insured persons, which funds the Victims’ Guarantee Fund, explains the FGAO.

An average which hides very strong disparities. The FGAO draws up the list of the 5 most accident-prone departments in terms of non-insurance, depending on the place of registration of the vehicle involved.

The ratio of the number of accidents in relation to the number of vehicles registered in the department reaches 9.6 in Seine-Saint-Denis. This is almost 7 times the national average. The ratio is 5 in Val-de-Marne, 4.5 in Paris, 4.4 in Val-d’Oise and 3.7 in Bouches du Rhne.
