If 2023 was the year of popularization of AI, 2024 will be the year in which it will be integrated into Android and iOS smartphones. But not everyone will be entitled to it, because this new technology is very demanding from a hardware point of view.
A report from Macquarie Group tells us that the current RAM of smartphones Android will probably insufficient to fully exploit the capabilities of AI generative technologies which will be implemented in the chips of future smartphones. Even with the progress made in the miniaturization of components, chips as powerful as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 will only be able to reveal their full potential with a significant addition of RAM.

In a tweet published on making AI work on smartphones ” which reveals to us that “the typical current smartphone is equipped with around 8 GB of RAM,” while it will take 12 GB to generate images on the smartphonewith 20 GB of RAM, to enjoy intelligent assistant functionalities.
Smartphones of 2024 will need to integrate at least 16 GB of RAM to benefit from AI
Revegnus adds: “The era where high-capacity RAM becomes essential for smartphones is approaching.” If some Samsung Galaxy S, the Xiaomi 13 T Pro or the Asus ROG Phone 6 are available in versions with 16 GB of RAM, these devices are an exceptionand even the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the best Apple has to offer at the moment, only has 8 GB of RAM.
Macquarie has issued a report on the required RAM capacity to run on-device AI on smartphones, and it’s intriguing.

Will smartphones with at least 16 GB of RAM become the norm in 2024? We can doubt it. If manufacturers have to double or even triple the amount of RAM in their devices to be able to take full advantage of AI, it is the consumer who will ultimately have to foot the bill. It is therefore a safe bet that the distinction between entry-level smartphones and others will be done at the level of AI integration.
