The all-clear is given after a suspected cholera outbreak on a cruise ship

The suspicion of cholera cases on board the Norwegian Dawn has not been confirmed. As the local daily newspaper “Le Maurician” in Port Louis reports, all samples from the sick passengers came back negative.

At a press conference, Dr. Bhushan Ori, director of health services, said no other health problems were found on board the cruise ship. It is therefore expected that the Norwegian Dawn will be able to dock in the next few hours.

After lifting the ban on docking, the Mauritanian authorities are now preparing to receive the passengers who have been isolated on the ship since Saturday.

The Norwegian Dawn began its current voyage on February 13, 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa. Since spring 2023, an increasing number of cholera cases have been reported in the region. Around 200,000 cases were last reported in South Africa in January 2024.

After cases of illness were reported on board the Norwegian Dawn, the authorities in Réunion and Mauritius were on alert and suspected a possible cholera infection on board the ship.
