Are we finally going to have an announcement revealing FF9 Remake? A new clue has just been added to the balance and it has ignited the powder.
In 2021, FF9 fans almost had a cardiac arrest. Indeed, Nvidia was the victim of a huge leak, and a list containing several games was published on the Web. Some of them were also announced in the months that followed. And who could we see among all these titles? The remake of Final Fantasy 9. Needless to say, the community was fired up. The problem is that it’s 2024, and there’s still no official confirmation in sight. But that may soon change, at least if we are to believe a big clue left by a big figure at Square Enix.
FF9 Remake invites itself into FF14, it hides a secret
It all started at PAX East 2024, when the Dawntrail expansion for Final Fantasy 14 was revealed, with a release date set for July 2, 2024. Yoshi-P, the game’s director, showed off two items to collect via the Collector’s edition. The surprise is that we are dealing with the two main characters of FF9, namely Zidane and Garnet. They will take the form of small mascots who can accompany you throughout your adventure. Please note, to get Zidane, you will have to go through the pre-order box.
For many, this announcement leaves no room for doubt: the announcement of FF9 Remake is approaching. If some players are so formal, it is also because Yoshi-P said a strange sentence. “You may have noticed a lot of Final Fantasy IX references here, but the reason is a secret”, he explained, a big smile on his face. Is he referring to the remake? Well, it remains a possibility, even if we must avoid asserting anything. In any case, it made more than one fan’s mouth water.
Of course, Yoshi-P may simply be playing with our emotions. Let’s not forget that there have already been collaborations between Final Fantasy 14 and other opuses, such as with 8 in Shadowbringers. It may therefore be a simple coincidence, which takes advantage of the craze around the rumors of an FF9 Remake to increase the excitement. For a handful of players, it is therefore better not to get too carried away. However, many leakers agree that it does indeed exist, even if we are asked to wait a certain time.
A remake that takes its time?
Yes, according to the leaker I’m A Hero Too, FF9 Remake is indeed in the pipeline. It just “needs some fine-tuning”. Consequently, we should not expect it before 2025. And here, we are talking about its announcement, and not its release. Last year, our man also specified that the game “ definitely not coming to Switch.” Will it land on the Nintendo Switch 2 instead? Difficult to comment in the absence of a statement from the Japanese studio.
For his part, leaker Silknight claims that FF9 Remake will try to be as faithful as possible to the basic experience. On the other hand, it would not benefit from a budget as substantial as that of FF7. Given the time it takes to completely overhaul the seventh opus, we could understand why Square Enix would want to slow down at this level. Regardless, you have to take all of this with a grain of salt, because nothing is confirmed. We’re swimming in rumors, and obviously, it’s going to stay like this for a while.
