L’Apple Vision Pro becomes an accompanying accessory for caregivers during surgeries. At Cromwell Hospital in London, a nurse used the device during a procedure on a patient’s spine, allowing it to assist the surgeon with increased efficiency.

Ranging from surgery to aeronautics, the managers of the Apple brand have imagined a whole host of uses for their new product. Some are already being put into practice thanks to an application developed by eXeX, which designs platforms based on artificial intelligence and mixed reality to improve surgical performance. The latter is presented as a logistical and organizational tool, improving the workflow to, in this case, carry out two micro-interventions on the spine.

A digital twin of the intervention

The operating room nurse equipped with the Vision Pro was able to follow the procedure in augmented reality, through a sort of digital twin of it. In addition to being able to observe her environment, she saw all the important information about the progress of the surgery scrolling by, referring to it in real time. She was able to ensure preparation, monitoring of the process and the choice of the right tools. Thus, the helmet allows “ eliminate human errors » ensuring that the correct processes and instruments are used throughout the operation.

eXeX’s software provides nurses and technicians with touchless, holographic access to surgical preparation and procedure guides from the sterile field of the operating room, something previously impossible », Describes eXeX in a press release.

Syed Aftab, the surgeon, believes the app transformed a caregiver he had never worked with before into someone with more than a decade of experience.

The potential of mixed reality in the medical environment

This was not the first time the Vision Pro was used in such conditions. Last month, American neurosurgeon Robert Masson inaugurated it during a spinal repair operation.

We are in a new era of surgery, and for the first time, our surgical teams have the performance of holographic visual guidance and maps, improving visuospatial and temporal orientation, for every operation in all specialties “, he commented.

Note that similar applications are available on the Microsoft HoloLens, demonstrating the potential of this technology in the medical environment.
