For his first appearance as the dark avenger in “The Batman”, Robert Pattinson gets a star cast around Colin Farrell to the side.

Fans will have to wait until March 3, 2022, when “The Batman” with Robert Pattinson (35) as the bat man will finally be in the cinemas. It will be the first solo film for the winged avenger within the DC Extended Universe, in which Batman was already seen in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League”, both still played by Ben Affleck (48).

A film odyssey: The making of “The Batman”

A true odyssey will come to an end with the cinema release in spring 2022. A big Batman movie was announced back in 2015. Ben Affleck was supposed to act as director and lead actor. The start of shooting was delayed again and again. In 2017 it was announced that Affleck would step down from his role as a director in order to concentrate fully on the acting role. “Planet of the Apes” director Matt Reeves (55) directed it. After the first rumors became loud in 2017, Affleck confirmed in early 2019 that he would also resign as a performer. The new Batman was “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson in May 2019.

Filming began in London in January 2020, but soon had to be interrupted due to the corona pandemic. Just three days after a restart in September, filming had to be put on hold again as Pattinson allegedly fell ill with Covid. Shooting officially ended on March 13, 2021.

The theatrical release planned for June 2021 was postponed to October 2021 and then to March 2022 just to be on the safe side, also due to Corona.

“The Batman” – The characters and their actors

“The Batman” seems to be a kind of best-of from the Gotham universe. With the Riddler, Catwoman and the Penguin, several legendary villains from the Batman comics appear. The only thing missing is the joker that appears in one of the sequels. “The Batman” is according to the deadline the start of a trilogy.

Catwoman is played by Zoë Kravitz (32). The actress (“Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Big Little Lies”) lent her voice to the cat woman in “The LEGO Batman Movie” in 2017.

The Riddler appears to become Batman’s main antagonist. Paul Dano (37) embodies him. In “Batman Forever” (1995) “Gummigesicht” Jim Carrey (59) played the mystery friend.

Colin Farrell (45) gives the penguin. In a podcast appearance in July 2021, the 45-year-old downplayed his role as among other things “Gamesradar” reported. Farrell’s penguin can only be seen in seven scenes and has only nine minutes of screen presence. The actor also said that he didn’t put on weight for the role, instead he trusted the makeup artists. “If someone should praise my performance, I only have 49 percent of it,” he said.

A villain less defined by mask or costume is the Mafioso Carmine Falcone. John Turturro (64) plays him.

Batman’s allies are also prominently cast. Jeffrey Wright, 55, plays Commissioner James Gordon. As a butler and surrogate father, Alfred Pennyworth is the closest reference person to Batman aka Bruce Wayne. He embodies Andy Serkis (57), who is best known as a motion capturing star and, among others, gave Gollum voice, facial expressions and gestures in the “Lord of the Rings” films.

“The Batman” – The trailer

A detailed trailer for “The Batman” has been out for over a year. The clip doesn’t reveal much about the still secret story. You can see that a mysterious criminal initiates a cat-and-mouse game with Batman via anonymous messages – probably the Riddler, even if the barely recognizable Colin Farrell can be seen as the penguin Oswald Cobblepot. Visually, the trailer is reminiscent of the film noirs of the 1940s. Director Matt Reeves has already revealed that his film is primarily about Batman as a detective.
