Whether in transport, while cleaning or simply relaxing in bed, podcasts are a good way to get information, explore a subject, or just relax and laugh. Of the thousands of broadcasts that exist, there is something for everyone, and it’s a bit the same when it comes to listening to them since there are several dedicated applications. Here is a selection.

Pocket Casts, the best podcast app

Previously only in a paid version, Pocket Casts is an application that became free in 2019, and it is definitely worth it for its many qualities. This is not only our recommendation, but also the one that the community cites most regularly.

Audio effects, automatic downloads and content curation (i.e. podcast suggestions that might interest you) are on the program. Also note welcome compatibility with tablets and with Chromecast, complete statistics and an account system that allows synchronization of episodes listened to between different platforms. Note also that its web player is very practical.

Podcast Addict, the alternative

Podcast Addict has established itself as one of the references in the field. Available in free and paid versions (3.29 euros which will allow you to get rid of an advertising banner now integrated into the app), this application covers a large catalog integrating the iTunes database. Certainly, design does not seem to be among the priorities here, but we can only recognize a wide variety of content and an easy-to-use service.

Its search engine is very efficient, it is possible to create playlists, to be notified of the release of new episodes of the podcasts you follow, or to add podcasts to favorites. It also has many options such as a timer or playing local files.

Spotify and Deezer, “all-in-one” applications

Podcasts have become so popular that even the usual podcast platforms streaming musical could not ignore it. That’s why now Spotify and Deezer also integrate discovery, listening and subscription to many podcasts, including ours, Hi Techie.

Obviously, you will already know the experience offered here since you are already accustomed to it, and this allows you to group all your audio content needs within the same application, which makes the experience much more practical. This is probably the biggest strength of this integration and the reason why we are bringing both applications under the same roof.

AntennaPod, open source

If you are a supporter of free software, you should take a look at AntennaPod, an application open source playing podcasts. You can import a large number of podcasts from different sources, access password-protected feeds, automate certain actions, search episode titles and comments.

Open sourceAntennaPod is a podcast player which is of course free and without any advertising.

Other podcast apps worth a look

There are plenty of other podcast apps out there, with different designs and sometimes slight differences in usability and functionality. If you haven’t found what you’re looking for above, you may find it in this non-exhaustive list of highly recommendable applications.
