For five days, a Cockapoo bitch was stuck in a narrow crevice in a national park in the US state of New York – now she has been rescued unharmed.
The twelve-year-old animal named Liza survived the ordeal in Minnewaska State Park Preserve without food and water, the state parks said on Wednesday.
On October 7, a woman was on a hike with the dog when her four-legged friend fell into the gap. In the days that followed, the park staff tried to reach the place from which the bitch could be heard barking.
They finally succeeded on Tuesday! Aides from the Ulster County Animal Welfare Association and a cave rescue team managed to pull the dog out of the narrow crevice.
Lured by a hot dog
To do this, two rescuers had to descend into the crevice. First, the bitch was observed with a camera. The savior Jessica Van Ord was finally able to lure Liza with a hot dog and then catch her with a rod and noose.
The lady dog could then be lifted so far that she could be put in a rucksack and finally brought to the surface safely. The animal was hungry and thirsty, but in good health. Later she could finally be handed over to her relieved mistress.
Liza licked crevices in the rock
During the observation with the camera, the rescuers could see Liza licking the damp walls of the crevice and thus probably taking in fluids. According to the administration, leash is actually required in the park.
“It is always heartwarming not only to have such a positive outcome in such cases, but also to see so many people come together and put themselves in danger to save the life of an animal,” said Gina Carbonari, managing director of the Ulster County Animal Welfare Association. (man)
