The cinema year 2024 began in Germany with “The Boy and the Heron”. After the Oscar for best animated film, the Studio Ghibli production is scheduled to stream on Netflix.

The fact that “The Boy and the Heron” is not a US production is not only apparent from the animated film, but also from the release strategy of this year’s Oscar winner. Studio Ghibli in Japan decided to forego marketing the film completely, apart from a poster, in order to keep the plot secret.
The audience, they were sure, would find their way to the cinemas on their own. A daring but effective strategy. Outside of Japan they weren’t so brave and released trailers on a regular basis, but that didn’t hurt the success of the film either.

“The Boy and the Heron” came to Germany in January 2024 and now, almost three months later and after winning the Oscar, film fans are waiting for a chance to see Hayao Miyazaki’s (supposedly) last film in a stream.
But the film is not even available in home theaters in Japan, where “The Boy and the Heron” was released in July 2023. So we’re still waiting in vain for a specific stream date, but at least we now know where “The Boy and the Heron” will be shown over the course of the year.
Netflix has secured the exclusive streaming rights to “The Boy and the Heron” outside of the USA and Japan. This step comes as no surprise, as Netflix already offers all of Studio Ghibli’s other films. As soon as a start date has been set, you will of course find out about it at Netzwelt.
