Customers of an Irish bank were able to withdraw 1,000 euros from their account, while having a lower balance.
Yesterday was Christmas before time. The Irish bank BankOfIreland has suffered a bug in its computer systems which seems to have attracted people to cash machines. A common disillusion that led to the intervention of Irish law enforcement.
Withdraw money without having any
BankOfIreland customers were able to withdraw up to 1,000 euros from the establishment’s ATMs, with a minimum balance in the account. It would be a technical malfunction internal to the bank more than an act of cybercrime. Either way, law enforcement had to be mobilized to disperse crowds gathered in front of vending machines across the country.
As can be seen in this video posted on the social network X, the information spread like wildfire throughout the country, particularly through publications on social networks. If some users seemed to see in the situation an unexpected miracle, others saw the realism by recalling in the comments that “free money” does not exist. Following the large number of withdrawals made, some distributors have even been completely emptied of their tickets.
Situation of regularized accounts
If the situation has now returned to normal, remember that banks have computer logs. Each withdrawal remains identified with the bank card used for the transaction at the distributor. Also, the Irish bank has confirmed that all operations carried out today and resulting from the exploitation of this bug will be taken into account during the day. The euphoria of getting free money will have been short-lived and many customers will be disillusioned when they see their accounts overdrawn. The banking establishment also recommends that individuals in difficulty with regard to this event contact their services.
Note that BankOfIreland has already been asked by the Irish central bank to improve its computer system. If one might think that taking advantage of a bug of this type is not a fraud, it is quite the opposite. When an individual knows with certainty that he does not have this sum, but he consciously withdraws 1,000 euros, he is considered to be at fault.
