The video game will be entitled to its own Cannes Festival, an international event which must shine the spotlight on the industry. But does she even need it?

We had the Cannes Film Festival, we will soon have the Cannes Gaming Festival for video games. This new event will have its first edition in a year, in October 2023, a few weeks before Paris Games Week.

First a ceremony, then a real festival

The first year will be a warm-up round, with a simple awards ceremony. The categories, guests and jurors have not yet been communicated, but the organizer announces a “ international jury and legitimate, well-known and passionate personalities “.

Contrary to the Pégases of the video game, the Cannes Gaming Festival will not be satisfied with French productions and will turn to the international. Subsequently, from 2024, the formula will evolve, and the sole ceremony will be replaced by a real festival lasting five days, designed both as a trade show dedicated to professionals and an appointment for the general public. .

The event will be an opportunity to meet the various players in the video game industry, but also to discover the latest technological and creative innovations. Only the future will tell us if the project will be successful, but its creators have ambition to spare.

A gaming equivalent to the Cannes Film Festival?

For Antoine de Tavernost, boss of the event communication agency Auditoire, the Cannes Gaming Festival must become the equivalent of the Cannes Film Festival for video games, while the Pegasus are rather to be compared to the Caesars.

The other strongman of the project is Robin Leproux, ex-president of PSG, former manager of M6 and founder of ESpot, a space dedicated to gaming and e-sport in Paris. ” We don’t have an international festival for the 10e art that is the video game, equivalent of the 7e art for cinema at Cannes. Once I had this idea, I said to myself that it was absolutely necessary to organize it “, he says.

A fair return, according to Antoine de Tavernost, who recalls that video games represent the first cultural industry in the world in terms of turnover.
