Moscow has criticized the way the United States handled the affair surrounding basketball player Brittney Griner, who was imprisoned in Russia.

“The public hype not only distracts from the case, but disturbs it,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Thursday, according to Russian news agencies, on the discussion about American basketball player Brittney Griner, who is imprisoned in Russia.

The day before, the White House announced that US President Joe Biden had contacted Griner’s wife Cherelle. In an urgent appeal, she called on the government to do everything to bring Griner home.

First hearings

Two-time Olympic champion Griner (31) was on trial in Chimki for the first time last week, accused of carrying vape cartridges with cannabis oil in her luggage. She has been in custody since mid-February.

Another hearing is scheduled for Griner on Thursday. Biden had assured that he would work for her “as soon as possible release”. Griner was “wrongly detained under unbearable circumstances,” the Washington statement said.
