Facebook and Instagram operate on an algorithm system. When you see a post, it’s because Meta highlights it based on your history. It will soon be possible to return to a chronological thread for European users.

On its official blog, Meta announces many changes to its social networks in order to comply with European regulations (Digital Service Act). These changes are mainly related to its algorithm, which needs to be more transparent, but also less intrusive. According to the statement, more than 1,000 people are working on his changes within the company.

Facebook and Instagram will adopt the chronological feed

The main change to come is the arrival a chronological feed on Facebook and Instagram, something that does not exist today. It will be possible to see everything in order, without being assailed by parasitic publications:

“We are now giving the possibility to our community of European users to see content like Reels, Stories or posts that are not pushed by Meta using the algorithm. For example, on Facebook and Instagram, users will have an option to see Stories and Reels only from people they follow, arranged in chronological order from newest to oldest.”

Excellent news for users who will no longer necessarily be subject to an opaque system. Meta goes further by indicating be more transparent about its algo. 22 explanatory cards have been published to explain why this or that publication appears in your home. Some Reels are for example pushed because they are liked or commented on a lot, not necessarily by people you know.

Other features are to be expected. Ads will be archived, with their date of publication and which people they targeted (age, sex, location, etc.). More so, users between the ages of 13 and 17 will no longer be targeted by ads based on their activity. Tools for reporting illegal content (not only in violation of the terms of use) have also been implemented.

Many measures announced by Meta, therefore, which should arrive soon. It’s not yet clear when the thing will roll out, but the arrival of a timeline feed will only be the tip of the iceberg.
