The Cnil is investigating SMS targeting by the Zemmour campaign targeting the Jewish community

According to our colleagues from BFM TV, the National IT and Freedom Commission (Cnil) has opened an investigation against Éric Zemmour’s campaign for targeted SMS sent on the evening of Friday April 8, 2022. The SMS, entitled “Message from Éric Zemmour to French people of the Jewish faith”was sent to thousands of people presumably identified based on their religious beliefs.

Questioned by our colleagues, the Reconquête teams indicated that this political canvassing was entrusted to a personal data broker responsible for identifying people interested in the subject of anti-Semitism in Europe. The political party indicates that its service provider assured it that the persons concerned had given their consent for their data to be shared with third parties for the purposes of political communication. The Cnil indicates for its part that it has received reports and has opened an investigation into this canvassing. She will seek to determine if it is based on religion and if it can constitute an offence.
