The Count of Monte Cristo: “magnificent”, “imperial Pierre Niney”… Here are the first opinions on the most anticipated French film this summer!

Presented out of competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte adapts the Alexandre Dumas classic into a French blockbuster. What did the festival-goers think? Verdict.

Several months after the release of the Three Musketeers diptych – which attracted nearly six million spectators in France – Pathé is adapting another great classic by Alexandre Dumas: The Count of Monte Cristo. The film, written and directed by the duo Alexandre De La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, features Pierre Niney in the role of the famous Edmond Dantès.

On screen, the actor plays it against a most prestigious cast: Anaïs Demoustier, Laurent Lafitte, Bastien Bouillon, Anamaria Vartolomei, Pierfrancesco Favino, Vassili Schneider, Julien De Saint-Jean and Oscar Lesage. Expected in theaters on June 28, the film was first presented out of competition on May 22 at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

What did the festival-goers think?

“The Count of Monte Cristo is fantastic. A major French Hollywood production. And my god, give Jérôme Rebotier an Oscar nomination for an incredible composition.

The Count of Monte Cristo has been the subject of around thirty transpositions on the small and big screen. The most recent is the American one from 2002 with Jim Caviezel, while Josée Dayan’s mini-series with Gérard Depardieu remains one of the most famous.
