What is this Philips TV with Ambilight?
This Philips television has a 55-inch screen, a classic diagonal of almost 140 cm. The particularity of this model is undoubtedly the presence of Ambilight technology, which provides additional immersion and certainly ambiance your TV corner. Thanks to LEDs placed around and at the back of the television, the Xtra television can project lighting on your walls that matches the content broadcast on the screen. Ambilight, which works just as well with films as with video games, is a nice addition that offers a little more immersion. It also has the good idea of simply acting as an extra light, in the color and intensity of your choice, which is perhaps its best function for a warm atmosphere.
The Xtra 55PML9008 also features Mini LED technology, which offers more precise backlighting, and better contrast and brightness. In fact, the panel comes a little closer to the quality of OLED, without however matching it. The 4K resolution of 3,840 × 2,160 pixels is accompanied by HLG, HDR10+ Adaptive and Dolby Vision video standards. The image quality is there with the possibility of upscaling content to 4K. The well-calibrated colorimetry, coupled with the presets present, makes it possible to obtain an optimized image for most content. Too bad that on the sound side, Dolby Atmos is only revealed with an additional installation, such as a soundbar.
Is this TV a good deal?
It’s a good deal at less than €800 for a high-performance and versatile television, and if Ambilight technology interests you. The presence of two HDMI 2.1 ports, and a refresh rate of 120 HZ, allows you to connect a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, for a satisfactory gaming experience. The now classic VRR, ALLM and FreeSync Premium modes guarantee reduced latency, as well as minimal stuttering and tearing visible on the screen.
Finally, the interface of this television is an in-house OS from Philips. The Philips Smart TV OS is inspired by the classic Google TV or Android TV, and offers fluid and pleasant menus to navigate, with sometimes some latency, which does not prevent navigation from being pleasant. Voice commands are present.
