The story
In this age of franchises and sequels, The Creator is a Hollywood anomaly with its untold story and universe. Admittedly, the aficionados of science fiction will have recognized resonances with the universes of Matrix, terminator or blade runnerreferences that the author and director Gareth Edwards assumes and combines with others, from the war film (Apocalypse Now) to that of samurai (Lone Wolf and Cub).
Here is the official synopsis of the film: “In the near future, humans and artificial intelligence are waging a merciless war. Joshua, an ex-special forces agent weakened by the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and neutralize the Creator, the elusive architect of an advanced AI behind a weapon that could end the war. …and destroy all of humanity. With the help of an elite unit of operatives, Joshua breaks through enemy lines and penetrates deep into their dangerous territory. He will soon discover that the deadly weapon he is tasked with destroying is none other than a superior artificial intelligence that has taken on the features of a young child.
Who is in charge?
The Creator is written and directed by Gareth Edwards, with screenplay assistance from Chris Weitz (At the Crossroads of the Worlds: The Golden Compass). After the convincing Monsters in 2010, the British filmmaker had exploded thanks to the reboot of Godzilla four years later. A talent confirmed in 2016 with Rogue One: A Star Wars Storyhis latest film, both public and critical success.
Edwards knew how to surround himself well on the project. The photograph was framed by Greig Fraser (The Batman) in pre-production, then directed by Oren Softer during filming. The music is by Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Dunes, Inception), just that.
Finally, The Creator has the support of experienced producers, including the presence of Arnon Milchan (The Revenant) and Kiri Hart (RogueOne, The Last Jedi). A solid technical team that had to make do with a relatively modest budget of 86.1 million dollars, below Edwards’ previous films like Godzilla (160 million) and RogueOne (220 million).
