Who is The Crow with?

To succeed the late Brandon Lee, who died on the set of The Crow in 1994, Rupert Sanders has set his sights on Bill Skarsgård. The latter slips into Eric Draven’s costume, sporting a new gothic look.

To create the character here decked out in a mullet cut and numerous tattoos, the director explains to Vanity Fair that he was more inspired by his personal story than by the graphic novel and the original film.

“I think the beauty of Bill is that he is disturbingly beautiful, and as he transforms through his loss, he becomes this thing that he can’t even control. It’s the famous phrase: He who fights monsters must be careful not to become one.”.

“This look was me in the 90s, when we were squatting in London, mixed with modern influences like singers Post Malone and Lil Peep. I hope people who are 19 today look at it and relate. say: This guy is us. This image illustrates the beginning of his transformation into Crow. This is the moment when we realize that bad things happen”explains Rupert Sanders.

Bill Skarsgård will be surrounded by FKA Twigs, Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Jordan Bolger, Isabela Wei and Frenchy Sami Bouajila.

Does Alex Proyas approve of this remake?

The 60-year-old filmmaker, who directed 1994’s The Crow, is not a big fan of this remake project. The director’s reservations, however, come not from a sense of ownership, he said, but from a question of loyalty and respect to Brandon Lee, who died following a gun malfunction during filming.

“I really don’t get any joy out of seeing negativity about a fellow filmmaker’s work”wrote Alex Proyas on Facebook (via Deadline). “And I’m sure the cast and crew really had good intentions, as do all of us in any film.”

“So it pains me to say more about this, but I think the fan response says it all. The Crow is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and the movie has was finished as a testament to its lost brilliance and its tragic loss. This is its legacy. This is how it should remain.”

In his publication, Alex Proyas refers to an article from Comic Book Resources talking about the impressive number of negative reactions online.

Rupert Sanders hits back

In an interview with Vanity Fair, the director of the remake, Rupert Sanders, declared that he considered his version of The Crow as a tribute to Brandon Lee.

“Obviously, it was a terrible tragedy, and it’s definitely something that we always had in mind throughout the making of the film. Brandon was an original voice and I think he always will be synonymous with The Crow.”

“And I hope he’s proud of what we did and how we brought the story back. His soul is alive and well in this film. There’s a real fragility and a real beauty in his version of the Raven, and I think Bill Skarsgård feels like he’s the successor.”

The Crow new version is scheduled in our cinemas for June 5.
