Felecia Feely is a philosophy and psychology enthusiast and shares insights and tests in these subject areas on her social media channels and via her podcast. She just shared the “Dark Triad Test” on her profile “Felecia For The Win” via TikTok. It’s about whether a person has characteristics of the so-called “dark triad”: narcissism, which means exaggerated self-portrayal, Machiavellianism, which means being particularly calculating and manipulative, and psychopathy, which means a lack of remorse and empathy. The test aims to get to the bottom of these three character traits with just three questions.

Dark Triad Test: Do you have a dark side?

This is how the test works:

1. First, imagine that you are at a party or other large event with lots of people. How likely do you think it is that you are the most interesting person in the room?

2. Next, imagine that you left a negative comment on someone’s video online. The next day, the person writes to you and tells you that the comment hurt them. How much remorse or guilt do you feel after hearing this news?

3. For the final question, imagine that you are currently applying for or fighting for something. This could be a job, a new project or a potential partner. Would you say that sometimes it is necessary to make someone else look bad in order to make yourself look better?

The evaluation of the Dark Triad test: This means your result

To calculate your result, add up the individual points from your answers and divide the total by 3. You should get a number between 1 and 5.

Here are the evaluations of the possible results:

Less than 2: They have a heart of gold and definitely do not possess any of the “dark triad” traits. On the contrary, it could even be that your personality exhibits traits of the “bright triad.” These include humanism, Kantianism and belief in humanity. Humanism here means that you absolutely value the dignity of every human being. Kantianism holds that others should always be treated morally, regardless of whether it serves a purpose. And belief in humanity is the belief that all people are essentially good.

Less than 3: If you scored less than three, you probably have a functioning moral compass and a healthy level of empathy. Your risk of having narcissistic, Machiavellian or psychopathic traits is very low.

More than 3.2: Anyone who scored higher than 3.2 in the Dark Triad test could actually possess one or even more of these characteristics. You are therefore not automatically a narcissistic, calculating psychopath, but you may have certain similarities to such people. It could be that you have ever abused another person for your own purposes or that you see yourself as superior compared to others.

Are you one of those people who could have certain aspects of the “dark triad” personality? Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean there’s something fundamentally wrong with you. But perhaps it can help you to question certain thought patterns, actions and, above all, motives.

And of course this test is a very simplified form and cannot replace an assessment by a psychiatrist or psychologist. But it can certainly give us the opportunity to reflect on ourselves a little.
