The happy owners of the last call of duty to date had a very bad surprise when they slipped the Blu-ray into their console.
Last week, Activision launched a certain Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II worldwide. The commercial success was once again there, as the FPS achieved the best launch in the history of the PlayStation Store (pre-orders and day one sales included). A peak of more than 263,000 simultaneous players was recorded on the Steam version. But a small controversy still came to enamel the release of the title.
An (almost) useless disk
Thus, users who purchased the game in physical format on console found that the Blu-ray contained only 72 MB of data. In reality, the disc acts as an activation key which allows you to download the 150 GB necessary to have access to all the content. Playing offline is therefore completely impossible, even with a physical copy. And optical fiber is almost mandatory to download such a volume of data.
This kind of hardware DRM is quite new in the world of video games. Until now, we were used to boxes that contain a simple download code, and not a disc or a cartridge. It remains to be seen whether this was a first attempt or an obligation to ensure the proper functioning of the game. What is certain is that this practice has been strongly criticized.
