A new ecological bonus must be introduced in 2024 with modified eligibility criteria, the introduction of the environmental score and a maximum amount which should be revised upwards. If the government has not yet given details on this point, the credit organization Cetelem may have just unintentionally spilled the beans.
As you may know, the ecological bonus will get a makeover in 2024. The eligibility criteria will be particularly toughened, since this purchasing assistance will be exclusively accessible to 100% electric and hydrogen vehicles registered in France, and purchased/rented under a contract of a minimum of 2 years .
Unless there are any last minute surprises, the purchase price should always be less than €47,000 to benefit from the ecological bonus. The main notable novelty remains the introduction of the famous environmental score. To put it simply, the government wants to deprive all electric models of ecological bonuses whose manufacturing, production or even transport are too polluting.
You will have understood, the idea with this measure is to penalize models manufactured in China or the United States, in favor of vehicles designed in France or in Europe. In total, this score will be awarded based on 6 criteria, including the carbon footprint of the manufacturing of materials, the battery and even assembly.
The ecological bonus ceiling revised upwards in 2024?
On the other hand, we do not yet know whether or not the French authorities intend to increase the maximum amount of the ecological bonus. As a reminder, it is today set at 5,000 euros for everyone, and at 7,000 € for the most modest households (with a reference tax income per share less than or equal to 14,089 €).
If we are still waiting for details from the government on this point, Cetelem could well have already spilled the beans. As we mentioned in our columns this November 9, 2023, the credit organization has just presented its version of social leasing. With its formula, the BNP Paribas company intends to offer long-term credit, which will allow really benefit from an electric car at €100 per month… at least during the first three years of the contract.
When presenting its offer, Cetelem specifies that the State has committed to paying €13,000 in aid to beneficiaries of social leasing, distributed as follows: €8,000 ecological bonus and €5,000 leasing bonus. Unless it is an error on Cetelem’s part, we have here confirmation that the ceiling of the ecological bonus for the most modest households will be revised upwards. Of course, in the absence of official confirmation from the government, this information will have to be taken with a grain of salt for the moment.
