the electric bike of the year 2023 draws new versions for the city and all-terrain

Launched 6 months ago, the most high-end of Mustache’s versatile electric bikes, namely the Mustache J, welcomes two new transmissions: the Shimano Nexus 5 hub and the Enviolo automatic variator. Presentation.

Mustache J was one of the stars of last year. It was even our electric bike of the year 2023, elected by the editorial staff at the Frandroid Awards. We awarded it for a variety of reasons, including its French-made open frame and royal comfort. This VAE is back in the news with new versions which extend the range.

An even more high-end automatic version

The Mustache J is already available with two different drivetrains: the Shimano Cues 11-speed derailleur and the Enviolo manual variator. Now, the electric bike welcomes two new systems, the Nexus hub and the Enviolo Automatiq.

As its name suggests, the Enviolo Automatiq is a stepless drive. It’s a kind of variable speed that lightens or tightens the gear depending on the speed. The goal is to maintain the same cadence whatever the speed, and over a very wide range.

This transmission therefore arrives on two of the three variations of the Vosges VAE: the more urban J. on and the versatile J. all. The sportier J. all does not have the right to this transmission, which does not really have its place in off-road use. Here, unlike the Decathlon LD 920 E variator and its chain, the Enviolo operates using a belt.

The Mustache J. on Automatiq is launched at a price of 6,599 euros, only with the 625 Wh battery, just like its versatile cousin J. all. This one stands out with its Suntour XCR34 front fork with 120 mm of travel and its wider Schwalbe Johnny Watts tires (2.6 inches wide).

The Nexus lowers the price of the urban Mustache J

Good news, the Nexus hub is also here! With its 5 speeds that can be changed when stationary, this transmission is appreciated in town. As a result, the Nexus 5 is only available on the Mustache J.on.

This allows its starting price to be lowered to 5,199 euros, compared to 5,999 euros for the only manual Enviolo version in the catalog since launch.

Here is a summary of the new Mustache J range:

  • J.on Nexus: 5,199 euros
  • J. on Enviolo: 5,999 euros
  • J. on Automatiq: 6,599 euros
  • J. all Shimano Cues (derailleur): 5,199 euros
  • J. al Enviolo: 5,999 euros
  • J. all Automatiq: 6,599 euros
  • J.off Shimano Cues (derailleur): 5,699 euros
