the Epic Games Store is coming soon to iOS (and Android)

Unsurprisingly, Epic announced the upcoming arrival of its Epic Games Stores on Android and iPhone later this year. No upheaval expected, the publisher provides the same conditions for developers as its desktop application.

This is an announcement that Epic has been waiting to make for many years: the Epic Games Store will arrive on Android and iOS later this year thanks to European DMA (Digital Markets Act) regulations which now authorize stores of alternative applications.

The same Epic Games Store, but on mobile

It was on the sidelines of its State of Unreal event at GDC 2024 (Game Developers Conference) that Epic officially announced the news. While the announcement was expected, it indicates a significant paradigm shift for the mobile gaming sector.

Epic thus confirmed that it would adopt “the same fair conditions, accessible to all developers“. Concretely, the firm will thus take 12% from sales to publishers who will be able to reserve the remaining 82%. For comparison, Steam is still on a 30/80 model while the Google Play Store applies a commission of 15 to 30%.

Developers will also be able to offer in-app purchases within their games with the possibility of using the payment method of their choice to keep all of their income. Here again, the terms are much more advantageous than for iOS and the Google Play Store.

It now remains to be seen whether this mobile port of the EGS will resemble the desktop version of the application; we imagine that Epic will harmonize its store across all platforms. The new application should replace its Epic Games Launcher which was previously used to launch Fortnite on both platforms.
