The Epsilon Pirates are looking (once again) to show off

The Epilson hackers are still determined to make… talk about themselves. After having claimed responsibility in recent months for the hacking of the e-commerce company LDLC and the French cloud gaming specialist Shadow, these digital vandals briefly took control this weekend of the X accounts (ex-Twitter) of the media BFMTV and RMC .

“Hello, it’s Epsilon! #FreePalestine,” the intruders said in a tweet to BFMTV, a message published in the afternoon of Saturday March 23 accompanied by the address of the hackers’ Telegram channel. In another tweetthe news channel took (falsely therefore) the official account of the Kremlin.

Getting “advertising”

Malicious acts justified by a need for notoriety. A way of getting “advertisement”, in fact blandly explains to the Parisian Cap, one of Epsilon’s two hackers. “We don’t really have a goal,” he explains. “Basically we do this for fame (to make ourselves known), and we like to hit everything we find. »

This kind of media spotlight is in fact a way for these cyber offenders to put their malicious software back in the spotlight. Rented time for $15 per week or $35 per month, Epsilon is an infostealer, a malware that steals passwords or other identifying data. For example, social media accounts.

French-speaking pirates

Quite effective criminal activism, given their results. As noted by the threat intelligence firm Sekoia, the French-speaking administrators of Epsilon claimed responsibility in October for hacking the Shadow database. This intrusion was carried out after having deceived an employee. The latter had been targeted on Discord by a hacker who, under the guise of notifying him of downloading a game on Steam, had in fact sent him a link with malicious software.

Epsilon members then claimed responsibility for hacking social media accounts and video game news site IGN earlier this year.

But, reflecting the youth and immaturity of its members, this informal group seems to have variable geometry. Leadership is today claimed by Casquette and ChatNoir, when the latter was accompanied a few months ago by a certain Benef. One of the latest messages on Telegram is also a correction about the “real members” of the group. Obviously anxious that third parties are trying to gain publicity on their backs.
