The action series with Denzel Washington was actually supposed to end with “The Equalizer 3”. But how did Robert McCall’s story begin? That could reveal a planned prequel.

From 2014 to 2023, Denzel Washington played former DIA agent Robert McCall in “The Equalizer” films. Now, at 69, Washington seems to want to say goodbye to the character and the film series, at least “The Equalizer 3”, which is now also available on Netflix, is considered the last part of the franchise.
But now things could turn out differently – at least if director Antoine Fuqua has his way.

In an interview with NME, Fuqua talked about the idea of continuing “The Equalizer,” but with a prequel that shows Robert McCall’s younger years. Instead of recasting the role, for example with Denzel Washington’s son John David Washington (“Tenet”), Fuqua would simply have Washington digitally rejuvenated.
I’ve definitely thought about it a lot. Especially now, with the new technology and the AI and all these things… There’s a story to be told about how [McCall] became this person – the younger version? I often meet with Richard Wenk [Co-Autor der “Equalizer”-Filme] talk about it.
Antoine Fuqua
Fuqua has seen “Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fortune,” in which Harrison Ford has already been digitally rejuvenated, but wants to wait a bit longer as the technology continues to improve. Fuqua himself doesn’t know how Washington feels about these plans.
Fuqua himself provides an indication that Washington might not be interested in returning as Robert McCall. He reports that filming “The Equalizer 3” was quite strenuous for Washington.
Before a scene in which McCall has to run up a steep staircase, Washington Fuqua indicated that he was only willing to take a few shots. “His legs hurt! And it was hot too!” said Fuqua.
Since a “The Equalizer” prequel would rejuvenate Denzel Washington’s appearance but not Washington himself, the Oscar winner may not be ready for another “The Equalizer” film. At least fans can be happy that all three films in the series are now available on Netflix.
