“The Event” triumphs at the Lumières: a taste of the next Cesars?

Will the awards season offer The Event a well-deserved new spotlight? Audrey Diwan’s feature film won the trophy for best film and best actress on Monday for the young Anamaria Vartolomei at the 27th Ceremony of Lights, the awards given each year by foreign press correspondents in Paris.

Adapted from Annie Ernaux’s novel, this powerful drama, bordering on fantasy in form, recounts a literature student’s fight for an abortion in conservative 1960s France.”The film was difficult to make and I believe that my joy is equal to the obstacles that we overcame“, declared the Franco-Lebanese filmmaker during the ceremony broadcast on Canal +.

Awarded the Golden Lion in Venice in September, acclaimed by the press, The Event has had a mixed career so far in theaters, with less than 125,000 spectators since its release on November 24. Still broadcast on around twenty screens, it could benefit from the next Césars, whose nominations will be announced on January 26, to appear on a wider circuit.

On Monday evening, the Lights also awarded three prizes to Annette, the musical by Leos Carax. That of the best director, that of the best photo for the director Caroline Champetier and of the best soundtrack to the American duo The Sparks, co-writer of the film which tells the tragic love story between a star of the stand up , played by Adam Driver, and a singer interpreted by Marion Cotillard.

Other winners include Benoît Magimel, named best actor for his role as a patient with an incurable disease in In his lifetime by Emmanuelle Bercot, while Agathe Rousselle, the star of Titanium by Julia Ducournau, was named female revelation of the year. Young Timothée Robart won the male revelation trophy for Magnetics, by Vincent Mael Cardonna.
