The Fable – Our opinion on volume 6 of Pika’s manga

We meet again today, although belatedly, to talk about The Fable, the manga published by Pika Edition. The previous volume, relatively quiet, hinted at a burst of violence, an abrupt awakening with the promise of a possible confrontation between the dangerous Kojima and our hero.

There will be confrontation here, the opportunity to review Fable’s assassin skills. Rather tidy lately. Given the content of these new chapters, with a more adult tone and scenes, humor is logically in the background. The dramatic intensity being privileged.

They live at night

Still stuck in the hospital, Ebihara asks Fable to find out about the impending conflict between Kojima and Sunagawa. But he receives a threatening visit following this request. At the other end of the city, the meeting between Kojima and Sunagawa to decide on the “use” that will be made of Misaki within their business must take place in an industrial building closed for the night. Sunagawa has hired a professional killer to get rid of Kojima, accused of shooting down one of his men. However, Kojima too is on his guard and does not come to the meeting alone. But no one suspects that Fable will come to disturb the festivities to save Misaki.

The proposed chapters here are darker than usual. If we always find a few scenes that take the drama out of everything, the action will take up more space. The dramatic tension is preserved with the presence of Kojima and Misaki who is at his worst under his yoke. Issues arise and we see that the author manages to link his subplots properly with the main plot centered on our hero.

We are therefore dealing with a kind of gathering, all in a restricted place which is reminiscent of situations in gangster films. Certain scenes of nudity and violence are shown and will serve to give relevance to the narrated universe. However, there is no question of directly shocking readers, but rather of raising awareness of very real facts in society, Japanese in particular. Considering the treated universe, it was obvious that The Fable would end up addressing more frontally the dark side of its history.

The main confrontation of the volume, the climax, is gripping and will benefit from a devilishly effective staging, with in particular a visually magnificent end to the fight. More than a cool confrontation to follow, it is above all an opportunity to witness the intelligence of the author who gratifies us with boards that perfectly reflect the situation.

Moreover, if in the previous volumes everything tended to show a Fable in the skin of Satô, not exuding serenity or confidence, it is clear that once in his role of implacable killer, the tendency is counterbalanced and we no longer gives dear skin to his enemies. However, until now we have never really seen Fable confronted with other professional killers.

But in this volume 6 of The Fable, we are lucky to witness a duel between confirmed killers. Without revealing too much, know that the sequence in question is well thought out. Katsuhisa Minami manages to harmonize his drawing with his staging of the action to immerse us completely in the action. The meticulous and cinematographic cutting has its effect, but here takes on another dimension through the author’s aesthetic choices which transcend its impact.

Should we fall for volume 6 of The Fable?

A dynamic and gripping volume, without really down time. The Fable continues to amaze us with the quality of its narration and to grab us thanks to a quality staging. Not to mention the gallery of characters just as successful, due to a very good writing. Then, if the drawing is once again excellent, this volume 6 goes a notch above, if only for the time of a sequence, with relevant visual work to accentuate the atmosphere and the sensations that can be get out of it. Minami has a real sense of staging, that’s undeniable.
