the fans’ dream shattered? Square Enix responds!

With the success of FF7 Remake and the huge wait for Rebirth, there are many questions about a potential remake of another episode, notably Final Fantasy 6.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake was a huge success, there’s no doubt about it. So much so that the second part, entitled Rebirth, is eagerly awaited by everyone. Square Enix is ramping up the pressure by revealing information and videos galore. In this context, what about a remake of another FF episode, for example Final Fantasy 6 Remake? Producer Yoshinori Kitase answered this question.

FF6 Remake on the way soon?

French YouTuber Julien Chièze had the opportunity to interview Yoshinori Kitase as part of the upcoming release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. During a question, the emblematic figure of the J-RPG franchise gave his opinion on a potential remake of Final Fantasy 6. He explains in particular that FF7 Remake is so ambitious that it is divided into 3 parts. To carry out similar work for FF6 Remake, it would probably take double that, or 20 years… Unless there is a big surprise, we should therefore not hope to see a game such as this remake arriving any time soon. Despite everything, the man readily recognizes that there are many fans around the world who appreciate the game. He explains that he can’t even imagine the work it would represent because the game is even bigger, with even more characters.

This is not the first time that Kitase has spoken about it, and in another interview that we were able to refer to on Gameblog last June, we learned that FF6 Remake would be very difficult to achieve. Upon release, Final Fantasy 6 was well received, both for its story and gameplay mechanics. The game had a notable influence on subsequent role-playing games, and remains popular with fans of the series. The gameplay includes the Active Time Battle combat system, typical of the series at that time.

Players manage a team of characters, each with unique abilities, and can equip and customize them with different skills and equipment. The game’s soundtrack, composed by Nobuo Uematsu, is recognized for its quality. The graphics, although limited by the technology of the time, were praised for their style and expressiveness.

FF7 Remake, the sequel coming soon

FF7 Rebirth, the long-awaited sequel, will be released on February 29, 2024 exclusively on PS5. Picking up where the previous remake left off, the game promises to surprise even longtime fans, including introducing unexpected elements such as Cloud and Sepiroth’s collaboration in a new timeline. This is perfect for players who felt like they already knew everything about the universe. This shows that even with a remake, it is always possible to reinvent yourself.
