Stellantis has just announced its partnership with Ample, a manufacturer of removable batteries and charging stations. This technology, already adopted by the manufacturer NIO, allows you to recharge your electric car in just 5 minutes, without having to plug it in. Tests will begin in 2024 on around a hundred Fiat 500e.
Last year, NIO dropped a little bomb on the automotive sector with its new type of charging stations. Rather than plugging in your car and waiting for it to recharge, the Power Swap Station completely replaces the vehicle’s battery. The operation may seem intimidating, but it has a strong argument to convince the most skeptical: it only takes 5 minutes.
While charging time is one of the obstacles to purchasing an electric car for many motorists, we understand that other manufacturers are taking a close interest in the technology. This is particularly the case of the Stellantis group, which notably owns Peugot, Citroën, Alpha Romeo and even Fiat. And it is precisely the latter which will benefit first from this revolutionary technology.

The Fiat 500e will be entitled to a removable battery
In a press release, Stellantis announced a new partnership with the start-up Ample. The latter will now have the role of supplying the group with removable batteries and installing suitable charging stations in the selected areas. Note that the American company has a reputation for designing swapping stations capable of being deployed in just 3 days, which certainly explains the choice of Stellantis.
It is the Fiat 500e which has been selected by the group to carry out initial tests, in Madrid, from next year. If these go well, the entire range should be entitled to these new batteries. “The partnership with Ample is another example of how Stellantis is exploring all avenues enabling freedom of mobility for our electric vehicle customers,” said Ricardo Stamatti, Vice President of the Charge and Energy Business Unit at Stellantis.
