Around 800,000 Swiss people live abroad. These are their stories.

Virtual world tour

Around 11 percent of the Swiss population lives abroad. There are many reasons to emigrate: instead of receiving social assistance in Switzerland, to Mauritius or from Appenzell to Alaska as a musher. In the program “The Fifth Switzerland” Swiss people talk about their lives abroad.

Emigration is trendy

In 2022, the number of emigrants will exceed 800,000 for the first time. This corresponds to an increase of 1.5 percent compared to the previous year, says the Federal Statistical Office (BFS).

For 15 years, the program “The Fifth Switzerland” on Radio SRF 1 has given voice to Swiss people who have turned their backs on their homeland.

Your connection to Switzerland

There are still a few spots on the globe that have not yet been populated by a Swiss and from where no one has reported on their life abroad on the program “The Fifth Switzerland”. If you know someone or have plans to emigrate yourself, then get in touch.
