The announcement was made today ahead of Disney’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas next week, during which the studio showcased its slate of upcoming films, filled with remakes, sequels and, of course, other films already announced. We now officially know that The Mandalorian & Grogu will arrive on the big screen on May 22, 2026, more than 2 years from now.

By scheduling The Mandalorian & Grogu in the pre-summer corridor, Disney is returning to its old strategy of maximizing box office potential by avoiding direct competition with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film will arrive three weeks after the next, currently untitled Avengers film, on May 1, 2026. It’s a decision clearly inspired by lessons from the past, following the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story just weeks after 2018’s record-breaking Avengers: Infinity War – a spacing that effectively quarantined spin-off performance at the box office.

The Mandalorian is coming to the big screen soon

Although plot details remain closely under wraps, the May 2026 release gives some clues about The Mandalorian & Grogu’s production schedule. According to reports, filming is expected to begin in California in June and last several months until early fall.

As for the creative team and casting, very little has been confirmed aside from Pedro Pascal who will play the main role of Mando. Giancarlo Esposito has been very enthusiastic about reprising his character of Moff Gideon, while Katee Sackhoff’s return as Bo-Katan seems likely, but is not yet acquired.

After letting the Star Wars franchise fallow on the big screen for more than half a decade following the conclusion of the Skywalker saga, Disney is preparing for another aggressive push into movie theaters. The Mandalorian & Grogu look set to lead this charge, taking advantage of the great popularity of the series to establish itself at the box office.

What is certain is that 2026 is shaping up to be a massive new year for Star Wars, hot on the heels of the anonymous December 2026 film, which is widely expected to be Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s “New Jedi Order” project. As for season 4 of The Mandalorian, it should arrive later than expected.
