The finesse of the MacBook Air and the performance of the MacBook Pro combined in a single machine thanks to an innovative cooling system

Frore Systems implemented its AirJet piezoelectric cooling system in a MacBook Air, allowing its M2 processor to match the performance of a MacBook Pro equipped with the same chip.

The MacBook Air could become as efficient as a MacBook Pro thanks to a fanless cooling system developed by Frore Systems. To demonstrate its effectiveness, the company presented a demonstration of its AirJet Mini technology installed in a MacBook Air with an M2 processor.

Without an active cooling system, the MacBook Air modulates its processor performance during intensive tasks in order to maintain an adequate operating temperature. The AirJet Mini active cooling system manages to limit temperature rise, so Apple’s thinnest ultraportable was able to match the score of a MacBook Pro M2 when running the Cinebench R23 benchmark test over an extended period.

The AirJet Mini active cooling technology (outlined in red in the right image) integrated into a MacBook Air M2 consists of three piezoelectric modules combined with a vapor chamber and a copper plate.

A mini piezoelectric air pump

The AirJet technology was unveiled at the latest Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. It is based on miniature membranes which vibrate under the effect of piezoelectric stimulation. The movement generates a counter pressure which draws in air and circulates it at high speed through a steam chamber and a copper plate dotted with fins which will contribute to cooling. An Airjet Mini module measures 27.5 x 41.5 mm, is 2.8 mm thick and weighs 9 grams. According to Frore Systems, it can remove 5.25 watts of heat by consuming 1 watt.

Three AirJet Minis were installed in the MacBook Air used for the demonstration. The design of the Apple laptop has not been changed, specifies the manufacturer. It was still necessary to remove a little thickness from the rear cover to accommodate the device, create an air intake near the hinge and use the speaker grilles as an evacuation.


A call to Apple

Frore Systems announces having obtained an increase from 12 to 20 W in processor power (+67%) and an increase from 2600 to 3200 MHz in its speed (+23%). The company has no plans to market its technology to the general public. She hopes to convince laptop manufacturers to adopt her solution which would allow them to develop slimmer designs.

According to Macworld, if Apple integrated AirJet into the MacBook Pro, it could use a larger battery and thus boost autonomy. The Mac Studio could also see its design significantly reduced if it replaced its two-fan cooling system with this solution.
