The first success of generative AI in video games is unexpected

The first game using generative AI in an intelligent way is here and it is far from the AAA or revolutionary RPG that we could have imagined.

When we talk about generative AI with enthusiasts in the field of video games, we very quickly arrive at the fantasy of discussion with NPCs as demonstrated by Nvidia at CES 2024. We imagine a game capable of creating quests at volley, or characters who can interact with the player for hours. However, the first popular video game to use generative AI is far from all that.

The Doodle God with AI sauce

The game Infinite Craft quickly became a small phenomenon on the web. This is a browser-only game with a super-simple interface. It offers you to combine elements to create results. These results then themselves become potential ingredients for new combinations. Many games of this genre already exist, the most famous of them so far was Doodle Good. The twist in Infinite Craft is that the combinations were not developed and anticipated by the creator, but are in fact the result of generative AI.

The game then becomes, as its name suggests, infinite. For the creation of the game, Neal Agarwal, the creator, based himself on llama 2, the open model pushed by Meta, Qualcomm and Microsoft in particular.

To try the game, it’s completely free, just go to the official Infinite Craft page.

It’s a very simple idea, but it shows that everything is still to be imagined in the field of video games with generative AI.
