  • In the USA, the first media have published test reports on the Apple Vision Pro.
  • The technology, immersion and fast controls are particularly praised.
  • The previous app scope, price and handling received criticism.

Shortly before the release of the Apple Vision Pro there on February 2, 2024, press representatives in the USA have been able to test the mixed reality headset extensively for a few days. The first test reports from the technology experts are now arriving. Accordingly, Apple’s Meta Quest 3 alternative scores with immersion and optics. But there is a problem elsewhere.

World-famous media websites CNET and The Verge explain in detailed test reports what the strengths and weaknesses of the Apple Vision Pro are. For example, the high-quality micro-OLED display, which is said to deliver excellent video passthrough and incredible graphics, is praised. Video passthrough is a function that allows you to see real content through the glasses, often supplemented by digital content (augmented reality).

Potential for the best VR and AR experience yet

Controlling the menus should also feel pleasantly fluid thanks to good hand and eye tracking. The testers also positively emphasize the integration into the Apple ecosystem and compatibility with corresponding apps, but immediately add several points of criticism. As with many current VR glasses, the overall scope of apps and content is still too small. The necessary cabling, the weight and the high price also continue to be a deterrent.

The glasses are particularly impressive with their technology and the immersion of the virtual world as well as the fusion of the real and virtual worlds in the form of augmented reality. For some testers it was even a strange feeling – according to their own statements.

Technology, price and content remain points of criticism

Nevertheless, the first tests read sobering compared to Apple’s promises. A look at the test grades confirms this. CNET, for example, only gives the Apple Vision Pro a 7.8 out of 10. The result isn’t bad, but considering the price and the anticipation stirred up by Apple, it’s still a damper.

In the end, it is primarily the lack of content such as games and apps that is why many VR headsets have not yet been able to properly establish themselves on the market. If you want to be successful, Apple has to outperform the Meta Quest 3 app range with the Vision Pro, at least in the long term.

At launch, the Apple Vision Pro might not be worth its price of over 3,000 euros. Those of you who wear glasses have another reason to think carefully about purchasing the Apple Vision Pro: According to the testers, the Apple headset does not work in combination with normal glasses.
