The Flash: the complicated genesis of a film announced nearly 20 years ago

After many changes of directors and other release postponements, “The Flash” has finally been visible in cinemas since Wednesday. Here are 5 things to know about the DC blockbuster.

What is it about ? Realities collide in THE FLASH when Barry uses his superpowers to turn back time and alter his past. But his efforts to save his family are not without consequences for the future, and Barry finds himself trapped in a reality where General Zod is back, threatening to wipe out the planet, and where superheroes have gone. Unless Barry can pull a much-changed Batman out of retirement and come to the aid of an incarcerated Kryptonian, who isn’t necessarily the one he’s looking for. Barry then engages in a terrible race against time to protect the world he is in and find the future he knows. But will his ultimate sacrifice be enough to save the universe?

Musical chairs

The movie The Flash is a very long-standing project. Already in 2004, David S. Goyer was announced to be directing the film dedicated to the superhero. It is then the names of Seth Grahame-Smith (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Abraham Lincoln, vampire hunter…) and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) who were respectively attached to the feature film in 2016. It is finally the It director Andy Muschietti, who landed the job in 2019.

A long delayed film

If Ezra Miller was hired in 2014 to play Barry Allen, it took almost ten years to see a solo film dedicated to the superhero, who first appeared in Batman v Superman and Justice League. The names of the directors vying to direct The Flash have come and gone over the past few years, and rewrites have also multiplied since 2017, constantly pushing back filming. In January 2020, it was announced that the film would be released in France on June 29, 2022, but it was still a false start: Andy Muschietti’s feature film finally began shooting on April 19, 2021, for a release first scheduled for November 2, 2022, then June 14, 2023.

In danger

After assaulting a fan in 2020, Ezra Miller has regularly made tabloid headlines since 2022. Arrested twice in Hawaii for disturbing public order and harassment then assault, the comedian was charged with embezzlement of a minor and charged with burglary. “I recently went through a period of intense crisis. I now understood that I suffered from serious mental problems and that I had to treat myself. So I started treatment”explained the comedian to variety in August 2022. Behavior that has jeopardized the release of The Flash, with some wondering if Warner Bros. was going to replace the actor, or quite simply cancel the release of the film.

A family matter

The Flash is produced by Barbara Muschietti, sister of director Andy Muschietti. She is also the producer of her previous films: Mama, That and That: Chapter 2: “I work with my brother because I admire him. I have dedicated my professional life to our collaboration because I have total faith in him, in his vision as an artist and in his integrity as a human being. project, I was not surprised because I always knew it would be up to it. I am very proud that my little brother has directed a film of this magnitude without ever giving up on his vision, in other words making a great superhero and adventure film that is based on a very strong emotional stake … the love between a mother and her son.”

Unsolicited Grant Gustin

Interpreter of Flash in the eponymous series, actor Grant Gustin has never appeared in DC films. Zack Snyder, director of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League in which Flash appeared, explained that he did not want to cast Gustin for the role because the tone of the series and that of the films were too different. In addition, the concept of multiverse makes it possible to have two different actors to play the same superhero, the two universes evolving in parallel but without crossing.
