“The Fracture”: general crisis in the hospital

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – WHY NOT

After An impossible love (2018), adaptation of the eponymous novel by Christine Angot, which is undoubtedly her best film, Catherine Corsini returns to the atmosphere of the dramatic comedy that already nourished The beautiful season (2015). In this film, the peasant problematic and women’s struggle were crossed with a homosexual love affair between a farmer and a teacher in France in the 1970s. The divide this same concern to combine politics and mores, but applied this time to our time.

The hospital constitutes the unit of place and time. Arrive there, after a short introduction to the characters, the main protagonists of the film. A bohemian lesbian couple in the midst of a crisis, consisting of Raf (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) and Julie (Marina Foïs), the second leaving the first, which, in all its forms, fell into the street chasing after him and broke the elbow. Yann (Pio Marmaï), a “yellow vest” truck driver who has a metal riddled leg, after receiving an unbound grenade during a demonstration. Already there, since she works there as a nurse, Kim (Aïssatou Diallo Sagna, a real caregiver in life) is finally the fourth protagonist of the film.

Suffice to say that the story makes the crisis its main driving force, breaking it down to all levels of the story. Crisis of the couple, embodied by the female tandem, entirely devoted to a sort of frenzied and desperate comedy of the reconquest of which we let the reader imagine how much Valeria Bruni Tedeschi invests in it. Social crisis with the precarious working class Yann, victim of a police blunder, drunk with rage and pain, and desperately wanting to take back his truck to make his delivery, so much he fears losing his job immediately. Finally, the hospital crisis, of which Corsini highlights the inadequacy and overflow of structures, as well as the courage, the selflessness and the dedication of certain personnel (not all!), gathered in the character of Kim.

One of the essential challenges of the scenario is therefore to make these different shots, registers and characters interact. To find in a word a circulation which makes room for the generalized fracture announced by the title and which we know only too well that it is that which French society knows today. It will therefore be necessary to organize a few false starts for Julie, exasperated by her lover who takes advantage of the situation, so that the latter, left to her own devices, first takes the nose with Yann, before making a class reconciliation. It will also be necessary to stage the police charge against demonstrators cornered in front of the emergency room so that the medical profession, summoned to deliver to the police the identity of the patients “yellow vests”, regains consciousness of its role in the city.
