The “free” games of November 2023 on the PSN

To be able to play online with your PlayStation, you must subscribe to the PSN Plus Essential service. This offer allows players to try out a few titles chosen by Sony, at no cost other than the price of the subscription to the service. And in fact, since last month, the price has increased from 59.99 per year to €71.99; each new batch of monthly games is therefore eagerly awaited to see if the quality keeps up with the inflation curve. Unfortunately, this month, we cannot say that this is the case since the selection oscillates between glory of the past (Mafia II dates from 2010 and its Definitive Edition of 2020), competitive game with asymmetrical gameplay (Dragon Ball: The Breakers) or clone of Left 4 Dead in the space (Aliens: Fireteam Elite).

Mafia II: Definitive Edition

No need to be finished Mafia (including the Definitive Edition was also “offered” with the PSN Essential subscription) to tackle Mafia II: Definitive Edition, the two stories being independent. However, we find this main plot, very Scorcesian, in which a young man – here Vito Scaletta – sees himself drawn into the underworld despite himself. Without spoiling the story in the slightest, this is bound to end badly. Presented – wrongly – as a GTA-Like, the Mafia saga has an inimitable atmosphere and this Mafia II: Definitive Edition no exception to the rule: we stroll the streets of Empire Day in pink Cadillacs that Elvis would not have denied while listening to the King on the radio or other emblematic artists of the 50s and 60s; a real bath of nostalgia. The gameplay remains very classic, but the story is told well enough to have a good time, if you haven’t already acquired the game since 2010.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers

More original, Dragon Ball: The Breakers is a competitive game with asymmetrical gameplay: a single player faces an entire team of other players who collaborate. They must leave a planet by cooperating to launch a spaceship, the only way to escape a villain from the Dragon Ball Z mythology (Frieza, Cell, Buu…) much more powerful than them. Let us point out, however, that these expiatory victims are not completely without resources and that they will be able to call on the heroes of the saga. So we will be able to witness the famous fights using kamehameha and other Final Flash… Let us point out that Dragon Ball: The Breakers is an online-only game; you cannot play it alone, except to follow the tutorial.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite

True homage to the film Aliens by James Cameron, Aliens: Fireteam Elite pits a team of human players against hordes of slobbering and unfriendly xenomorphs. Other enemies will spice up the adventure in this most classic shooter, which sometimes brings a small dose of strategy when it comes to planning the defense of an outpost on which waves of belligerent aliens will descend. To vary things a little, several classes are planned so that players can try their hand at various tasks by playing an engineer, a doctor, a soldier… Effective certainly, but very classic in its unfolding, Aliens: Fireteam Elite will especially speak to aficionados of the horrific space series who will find many easter eggs – without face hugger inside – relating to their beloved universe.
