The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is imminent: 450 W, PCIe 5 slot and 10% faster

Announced at CES 2022, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti should hit shelves in the coming days. Leaks point to high power consumption, a PCIe 5 power connector, and performance not much higher than the RTX 3090.

Announced fairly quickly during Nvidia’s conference at CES 2022, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti should be the ultimate graphics card in the RTX 30 series. , it will again use a GA102 chip, but this time pushed a little further in its possibilities.

The chip thus accommodates two additional calculation blocks (84 against 82), enough to display 10,752 calculation units, or 256 more than on the current flagship of the brand, the GeForce RTX 3090. In turn, the rest of the units also takes a little height with 84 units dedicated to raytracing or even 336 Tensor Cores dedicated to AI, i.e. respective gains of 2 and 8 units. An evolution which does not mark a real break, but is accompanied by an operating frequency revised upwards, both on the GPU which goes from 1695 to 1860 MHz and on the graphics memory at 2625 MHz (against 2438 MHz). However, the memory is still 24 GB GDDR6X.

These small advances in terms of technical characteristics are accompanied, however, by a nice increase in the energy envelope of the graphics card. The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is thus given for a typical consumption of 450 W, i.e. 100 W more than on the RTX 3090. This increase of around 30% should allow the GPU to express itself fully, without having to restrict its frequencies. . Some partners will also go beyond this value, allowing operation at 480 W and even 516 W in “performance” mode.

This could be for Nvidia to better prepare its partners for the next generation of GeForce RTX. Thus, the highest-end GeForce RTX 40s should probably peak at 600 W. The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti represents an ideal playground for tweaking the cooling systems of partners, who will have a hard time trying to operate efficiently and without turbine effect.

The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is also a test run for the PCIe 5 power connector, which we have already mentioned in our columns. The Nvidia connector specific to the GeForce RTX 30 Founders Edition is swapped in favor of a PCIe 5 to 12+4 pin power connector. This applies to both the Founders Edition model and some third-party copies. This connector allows you to power the card with a single cord, provided you have a compatible power supply. Otherwise, you will have to deal with a Molex adapter (supplied), which will require three PCIe cords.

The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is expected to hit the market in the coming days with reviews published in a few hand-picked outlets. Initial feedback shows 5 to 10% higher performance than the GeForce RTX 3090. Regarding the price, nothing has been communicated for the moment, but it should be around 2000 €.
