BENAHAVIS, Spain (Reuters) – Firefighters have managed to bring a violent blaze under control that has ravaged 3,500 hectares of forest and brush in southern Spain, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Felix Bolanos said on Friday.

The fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon in the town of Pujerra, not far from Malaga, in the Sierra Bermeja, north of the Costa del Sol, and led to the evacuation of some 2,000 people from the town of Benahavis.

“The good news is that the fire has stabilized, that it no longer affects the population and that the inhabitants will be able to return to their homes in the next few hours,” Felix Bolanos told reporters in Benahavis.

Hundreds of firefighters and several planes were still mobilized on Friday morning. Three firefighters were injured on Wednesday evening, one of whom is being treated in a Malaga hospital for serious burns.
