After a year of forced media diet, the ceremony, former antechamber of the Oscars, finds the antenna this Tuesday. Mission: regain respectability after the torrent of scandals.
Operation reconquest D-2 for the Golden Globes. Long perceived as Hollywood’s favorite evening but with an aura dulled by repeated scandals, the ceremony will try to redeem a reputation this Tuesday. After a year of forced media diet, the awards gala, once considered the antechamber of the Oscars, is back on the air and will be broadcast live on NBC across the Atlantic. In France, insomniacs will be able to discover the winners of the foreign press in Hollywood (HFPA) on Canal + from 2 am on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.
The signals are rather green for the HFPA after a year of purgatory and forced reforms following the revelations against the Hollywood specialized press. Many stars, seem to give the organization the benefit of the doubt. Austin Butler (Elvis), James Cameron (Avatar) Ana de Armas (Blonde hair), Anya Taylor-Joy (The menu), Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Jeremy Pope (The Inspection), Daniel Craig (Glass Onion: A tale at loggerheads) will be in the room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Like Steven Spielberg and his team of Fabelman actress Michelle Williams and screenwriter Tony Kushner. The autobiographical account of the director’s childhood Sea teeth is one of the favorites of the evening with The Banshees of Inesherin. Music is also on the riseElvis at Tar, terrifying portrait of a ruthless conductor where Cate Blanchett shines.
African-American gay comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the ceremony. Director Quentin Tarantino is among the presenters of the awards. Singer Rihanna, in the running for the soundtrack of Black Panther 2, tries to break free. On the other hand, it seems more compromised for Taylor Swift.
Among the unconfirmed big hitters are stalwarts of babylon, Damien Chazelle’s love and hate letter to cinema: Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt. Another question is the attitude of Tom Cruise. The producer and star of Top Gun: Maverick had returned the three Golden Globes received during his career in the face of the extent of racism, sexism and corruption plaguing the HFPA. The notable absentee will be Brendan Fraser. Named for The Whalethe colossal comedian is boycotting the Golden Globes, because of the inappropriate gestures made by the former president of the HFPA.
What influence on the Oscars?
Faced with the controversies which revealed that the association had no black members, the HFPA doubled the jury of the Golden Globes, co-opting 103 new entrants – who are not full members -, including many women and people from ethnic minorities.
This renewal notably resulted in rather relevant and reasonable appointments. In the past, the Golden Globes have been known to include unmistakable turnips as long as the credits for those films included a big name. As was the case with The Touristwith Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie.
The Golden Globes aren’t out of the woods yet. Their contract with NBC only lasts for this year. Humility and discretion are required. A priori no sumptuous post-ceremony parties where champagne flows freely sponsored by the studios.
It is also the influence of the prize list which is at stake after the recent controversies. In the past, a success at the Golden Globes was a valuable marketing tool, capable of launching a winning campaign towards the supreme reward of the Oscars. Will this still be the case? In Hollywood, some members of the industry seem to believe it and confide in private that they want a return to grace of the Golden Globes, which have been “an important cog in the awards season” for 80 years. Voting for Oscar nominations opens two days after the Golden Globes ceremony, Thursday, January 12. The Academy will announce the lucky contenders for the statuettes on January 24.
