Launched last year, the Google Pixel 6 Pro easily earned 5 stars after passing through our labs. A true benchmark among high-end smartphones, Google’s flagship must now face a newcomer, which is none other than its successor: the Google Pixel 7 Pro. In order to answer all your questions, Digital has organized a fratricidal duel to determine which of the two high-end smartphones deserves to be in your pocket, and if the latest from Google has enough to send your Pixel 6 Pro back to the closet.
A duel with an uncertain outcome
A year older, the Pixel 6 Pro should logically bow to its successor. The Google Pixel 7 Pro meanwhile recently felled the South Korean flagship Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra in a duel. But can we still speak of a “novelty bonus”? Nothing is less sure…
Indeed, the Pixel 7 Pro partly takes up the formula of its elder. The design is very similar and the technical sheets are close. The two Google smartphones have comparable dimensions, their screens have an identical diagonal and definition (1440 x 3120 pixels), and they are both equipped with a 5000 mAh battery.
Fortunately, Google hasn’t rested on its laurels during the year and is bringing some welcome new features to its flagship mobile. The Tensor chip, which equips the flagship of 2021, is replaced by a Tensor G2 chip which aims to be more efficient and more efficient, especially in video games. This allows the latest addition to Google to win both in terms of performance and autonomy against a Pixel 6 Pro which is still in no way exceeded.
The photo part, workhorse of Google, also benefits from a small update. If the definition of the three sensors remains identical (50, 48 and 12 megapixels), the 48 megapixel telephoto module goes to an optical zoom of 5x on the 7 Pro, against 4x on its ancestor. All this without counting the various optimizations made to the pixel processing algorithm. If the two belligerents are neck and neck, the Pixel 7 Pro ends up beating its opponent by a short head, in particular with a better ultra-wide-angle module.
As you will have understood, victory was not assured for the Pixel 7 Pro, and if we add the price to the equation, the choice becomes difficult. With its new flagship, Google is perfecting a successful formula. The advances are discreet but very present, without however deserving that you relegate your Pixel 6 Pro to the closet to succumb to the Tensor G2 chip and the 5x telephoto lens.
