the government is going to propose a reduction of 3% in volume of State expenditure

The government will propose a 3% drop in state spending in volume in the 2023 budget compared to the last amending finance law, announced Wednesday the Minister of Public Accounts Gabriel Attal in Le Figaro, a few weeks before his official presentation.

“Compared to the last amending finance law, we will propose to Parliament a 3% reduction in state expenditure in volume compared to 2022” indicated the minister in an interview with the daily newspaper published on Wednesday evening.

Last Thursday, Bercy had indicated that it wanted to significantly reduce the rate of increase in public expenditure over the five-year period, by 0.6% in volume on average per year, which also notably includes local authorities, specified the minister in presentation of the stability program that the executive forwards each year to the European Commission.

According to Gabriel Attal at Le Figaro, the release of emergency devices and recovery devices linked to the pandemic should make it possible to save nearly 9 billion euros in the next budget.

Also sources of savings, “the pension and unemployment reforms, which will be the subject of negotiations”, continued the minister.

On the side of the ministers, it is those of Labour, National Education and Defense who will see their means increase the most, in accordance with the commitments of the executive”, indicated the minister, benefiting “each from several additional billions” .

The Minister of Foreign Affairs has for his part demanded increases in allocations, particularly in the cyber sector, added Mr. Attal, specifying that the arbitrations on the budget should be finalized “at the end of the week”.

The Minister’s clarifications come the day after the adoption at first reading of the draft amending budget providing for a package of just over 20 billion euros to improve purchasing power in a period of high inflation.
