And yes, by making fun of my peers, one day I had to do you the pleasure of making fun of myself. I discovered the “high maintenance girl” this summer, when, over a drink with friends, we had fun sharing our unbearable personal obsessions, these behaviors which sometimes make us unbearable. My best friend then told me that I am too “high maintenance”, extremely demanding to speak French in text, being as ruthless with myself as with others.

When I think about it, I am forced to recognize my many similarities with the stereotype of the “high maintenance girl”, ranging from ultra-polished physical presentation to high-flying professional aspirations, for me as well as for my partner.

For‘Oxford English Dictionary (OED)the term refers to a woman in high demand, rather fussy, who requires a lot of care and attention. According to the media The Atlanticthis figure appears for the first time in the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally (1989), when Billy Crystal explains to Meg Ryan that there are two types of woman: high and the low maintenance. Placing her in the first category, he says: “ You’re the worst kind. You are high maintenance, but you think you are low maintenance. »

In the series Friends (1994-2004), Monica will then perfectly embody this character of control freakborderline castrating, as in this hilarious scene from episode 12 of season 6, where she asks her boyfriend Chandler to tell the rest of the group that she is not high maintenance!

With an exceptional sense of communication, the high maintenance girl will not hesitate to let you know her needs as well as her (strong) expectations, putting those around her under pressure. What’s the point of being in a relationship with someone if she knows she would be better off alone? No matter what you say, she has confidence in herself and knows she deserves better. So you have to treat her like the princess she is, always on top, from her toenails to her headgear.

The need to be courted, even adored

In date, if you have a setback, it had better be because your mother had a stroke. Of an impatient nature (especially towards others), she nevertheless takes two hours to get ready to go out in the evening. There, make yourself comfortable and open candy Crush, she hates to arrive first. A great romantic (and a bit of a drama queen), she needs to be courted, even adored, even after years of living as a couple.
