Scholz wants to make electricity cheaper

Olaf Scholz wants to cancel the EEG surcharge if he is elected Chancellor. The eco-surcharge on the electricity price should be paid from the budget, says the SPD politician. That relieves the burden on companies and citizens. A family of four saves an average of around 300 euros in electricity costs per year.

SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz has announced that if he chooses, electricity will be cheaper and the EEG surcharge will be canceled without replacement. “We want to abolish the eco-surcharge on the electricity price, the EEG surcharge, and pay it from the budget,” said Scholz of “Bild am Sonntag”. “That relieves the burden on companies and citizens. A family of four saves an average of around EUR 300 on electricity costs per year.”

The economy in particular complains about the high electricity prices compared to other European countries. In 2020, one kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity in Germany cost an average of 31.81 cents. Compared to the previous year (30.43 cents), the electricity price has increased by almost 5 percent. For three years now, consumers in Germany have been spending the most money on their electricity. In France, a kilowatt hour cost just 18.99 cents last year.

Scholz accused the Union of jeopardizing Germany’s future with its energy policy: “For a climate-neutral economy, we need significantly more electricity from renewable sources. The Federal Economics Minister denies this need. This is the CDU’s big electricity lie. The Union is thus endangering our future prosperity “said Scholz.

More solar systems and more wind turbines at sea and on land are needed, and permits have to go faster. “Power lines from the offshore wind farms in the north to the industrial centers in the south have to be approved within two to three years, not ten,” continues Scholz. Baden-Württemberg’s Green Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann recently announced a significant reduction in high electricity prices in the event of Green government participation in the federal government.
