2024 - The Idol: the sulfur series of HBO will not be entitled to a season 2

Series The Idol by Sam Levinson (Euphoria), with Lily-Rose Depp and singer The Weeknd in the main roles, has just been canceled by HBO and will not be entitled to a second season. A far from surprising decision for a more than controversial program.

Released on June 4 on HBO, and in Amazon Prime Video’s Warner Pass in France, the series The Idol had created controversy from the start of its production, between chaotic filming and toxic representation of women, all aggravated by the departure of director Amy Seimetz.

The controversy continued upon its release, where the series co-created by Reza Fahim, singer The Weeknd and Sam Levinson saw its episode count reduced from 6 to 5 in full airing. The icing on the cake, the critical and public reception turned out to be catastrophic, the series notably obtaining scores of 27 out of 100 on Metacritic, and 19% on Rotten Tomatoes.

After a few weeks of (false) suspense, the ax fell, as a spokesperson for the channel said: “The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re thrilled with the strong audience response. After careful consideration, HBO, along with the creators and producers, have decided not to offer a second season. are grateful to the creators, cast and crew for their incredible work.”

The Idol probably wanted to surf on the success of the sulphurous series Euphoriabut proved that the ambiguous tone of Sam Levinson’s program was not so easily adaptable.

Levinson, under fire from critics after a season 2 ofEuphoria already controversial and the departure of one of the main actresses, will undoubtedly have to rectify the situation with the third season of its series, whose release is announced for 2024.
