GHOST FOR THE NEW GENERATION?
Inscribed in the movement of romances for teenagers, The In Between reproduces all the codes: a small American town, a young ingenue, her meeting with the local sportsman and, inevitably, a tragic accident. Enough to satisfy the romantic appetite of the most blue flowers. However, this adaptation of Marc Klein’s novel – published in June 2021 only – stands out by mixing melodrama with fantasy.
Joey King plays Tessa, a photography enthusiast, who, during a film session, crosses paths with Skylar, played by Kyle Allen. When the latter dies following a car accident, the idyll flies away. Faced with lack and loneliness, the heroine believes she is receiving signs from her soul mate from the beyond.

Impossible not to think of Ghost, an emblematic film from the nineties, in which the character played by Patrick Swayze, who has become a ghost, tries to communicate with his beloved, played by Demi Moore. Here, no pottery scene, but a sweet mix between drama and ghostly history. The narrative alternates between past and present, without making the plot messy.
An endearing duo
Yes The In Between works rather well, it is thanks to its duo of actors. Starring in all three The Kissing Booth films, Joey King is already a star on the Netflix planet. But it was her role in the drama series The Act that confirmed her talent. In this fantastic romance, she signs a convincing and sensitive interpretation. Facing her, Kyle Allen, present in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, has enough presence and charisma to make this story vibrant.
Not sure that The In Between may win over those who are more reluctant to the genre, but the film should bring some tears to viewers already won over to the cause of young adult romances.
