The Institut Polytechnique, the Defense Innovation Agency, Dassault Aviation, Dassault Systèmes, Naval Group and Nexter, announce the creation of a Teaching and Research Chair dedicated to the architecture of complex systems – 24/ 06/2023 at 09:38

PRESS RELEASE – JUNE 2 3, 2023

The Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris), the Defense Innovation Agency (AID), Dassault Aviation, Dassault Systèmes, Naval Group and Nexter, a KNDS company, announce the creation of a Teaching and of Research dedicated to the architecture of complex systems

Thursday, June 2, 2023, at the Paris Air Show, the creation of a teaching and research chair at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris) on the architecture of complex systems was formalized, in the presence of Sébastien Le C ornu , Minister for the Armed Forces , and Emmanuel Chiva, General Delegate for Armaments . Dassault Aviation, Dassault Systèmes, Naval Group, Nexter, a KNDS company, and the Defense Innovation Agency (AID) are the patrons and partners of this chair, which aims to develop teaching and research through a systemic and multidisciplinary.

The growing complexity of industrial and operational systems (interconnection of hardware and software, networking of organizations) requires a global approach, requiring mastery of the concepts and principles of system architecture and taking into account many scientific disciplines. In the defense sector in particular, these systems must be robust, secure, and designed to be able to evolve with new technologies over long periods of time.

With regard to the issues related to national sovereignty in the field of defence, the Chair of Complex Systems Architecture aims for an approach based on two main axes: teaching and research. It will be carried by 4 permanent teacher-researchers, recruited by the Chair, with the support of engineers and postdocs, who will define the priority areas in terms of teaching and research to address the complexity of the theme through a global and additoinal.

Train the engineers of tomorrow

The Chair will give itself the means to increase the training offer on this systemic approach within four of the schools of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris (École polytechnique, ENSTA Paris, Télécom Paris, Télécom SudParis). The lessons will make it possible to better prepare students for the challenges of defense by providing them with knowledge in the field of complex systems, and to make them aware of the issues of national sovereignty with regard to the expectations of the Ministry of the Armed Forces.

Research to stay ahead

The architecture of complex systems, essential for designing collaborative weapon systems responding to the evolution of threats and anticipating major technological breakthroughs, will be understood in all its dimensions (concepts, methods, projects, etc.), in a wide variety of environments (air-sea-land, civil-military, etc.) and across many disciplines. In particular, the researchers aim to tackle the complexity of the theme through three approaches which will be detailed during the first year:

  • System engineering: how to design, understand and define a system architecture allowing the integration of new technologies while maintaining its robustness and safety? This approach notably integrates the use of mathematical and numerical models of complex systems. Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform will be the vehicle for system engineering transformation.

  • The integration of artificial intelligence: what levels of autonomy for what functions, how to manage interactions between systems and operators while ensuring overall security?

  • Information and communication systems: how to have secure, efficient and robust data exchanges between operated or autonomous weapon systems in multi-media and denied environments?

This chair thus strengthens the CIEDS created at IP Paris with the support of the General Directorate of Armaments (DGA) and the Defense Innovation Agency (AID) and is part of the ambition of the collaboration center on a large scale with major defense manufacturers.

The partners’ initial commitment runs until the end of 2028.
