The iPhone 14 Pro is the fastest in 5G… but not thanks to Apple

The iPhone 14 Pro comes in the majority of cases at the top of a ranking of the best 5G speeds, on smartphones, in 10 countries. A performance that Apple does not owe to its skills alone.

The iPhone 14 Pros are wickedly fast thanks to their in-house designed A16 Bionic chip, but they also go really fast on 5G… this time thanks to Qualcomm’s modem chips. A ranking carried out by Ookla (specialist in performance evaluation on mobile and fixed networks) in the 10 countries with the largest number of mobile devices connected to 5G according to the GSMA, places Apple’s latest flagship in the lead in most territories tested.

This ranking (which includes Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam), however, focuses only on the five best-selling 5G devices in each of these countries. It nevertheless makes it possible to compare the performance of some of the most popular devices on the market in the third quarter of 2022.

A muscular 5G for the iPhone 14 Pro

Among the countries where the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max come out on top: the United States, the United Kingdom and even Germany. Across the Atlantic the two devices get a median 5G download speed of 177.21 Mbps and 175.08 Mbps respectively. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 clocks in at some 162.50 Mbps on the spot, while the Galaxy S21+ 5G and Galaxy S22 Ultra clock in at 140.06 Mbps and 137.42 Mbps, respectively.

Same dynamic with our British neighbors, where the iPhone 13 mini / 13 Pro and 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max literally monopolize the ranking. In the UK, the iPhone 14 Pro Max thus achieves a median 5G download speed of 171.24 Mbps, compared to 165.49 Mbps for the second-placed iPhone 13 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 Pro, a little slower across the Channel, climbs to 158.24 Mbps.

In Germany, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max respectively occupy the first and second step of the podium (with 181.09 Mbps and 177.98 Mbps), while only one Apple competitor climbs into the top 5: the OnePlus 9 Pro 5G with 140.93 Mbps. Finally, we note that in the majority of countries selected for this ranking, one or more iPhone models come first or, at least, in good positions. Two exceptions to the rule: China and the Philippines, where no iPhone reached the top 5 fastest 5G smartphones.
