Damsel in distress?

In this film directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 weeks later), Brown plays Elodie, a docile young princess who agrees to marry a handsome prince before realizing that the royal family has chosen to sacrifice her in repayment of an old debt.

Thrown into a cave housing a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her intelligence and courage to survive.

If the plot of The Lady and the Dragon is reminiscent of that of the film The Dragon of the Lake of Fire by Matthew Robbins released in 1982, which already tells the story of a king sacrificing young women to a dragon to protect his kingdom, the Netflix blockbuster still seems to stand out by focusing about a heroine who will have to fend for herself to get out of trouble.

A modern tale

Robin Wright (Forrest Gump, Princess Bride) and Angela Bassett (Black Panther, 9-1-1) are also on display at The Lady and the Dragona film that brings a feminist angle to the concept of the damsel in distress.

As these images testify, he is Elodie’s not-so-charming prince (played by Nick Robinson seen in Love, Simon and the series Maid) who throws her into the dragon’s pit, and she is far from being the first to have suffered such a fate.

The girl-power side of the film is also illustrated by the juxtaposition of The Hymn to Love by Edith Piaf on images of Millie Bobby Brown ready to do battle with the dragon and those who put her face to face with him.

The screenplay by Dan Mazeau (Wrath of the Titans, Fast & Furious) therefore promises to overturn our expectations in terms of fairy tales by revisiting the great stereotypes of the genre (the naughty stepmother, the charming prince, etc.) to offer us a colorful story. of independence and bravery, with a heroine who will shed her image of a submissive woman.

To find out for sure, head to Netflix on March 8. A date which coincides with International Women’s Day, which is certainly not a coincidence.
